Tranmere Rovers are set to be represented at Wembley Stadium this season in the Football League Under-13s Girls Cup Final.

Pupils from West Kirby Grammar School won the Northern Final at the Club's Ingleborough training ground and will now play against the southern winner - representing Crystal Palace - of the competition prior to the Johnstone's Paints Trophy Final on Sunday, 30 March.

The girls, who are from years seven and eight, first won the Wirral stage of the competition which was run by the Tranmere Rovers In The Community team late last year.

They then traveled to Stockport in January where they defeated seven other Football League club representatives in the regional stage.

The Northern Finals were then contested between schools representing Tranmere, Carlisle United, Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday, with the event organised by Tranmere Rovers In The Community.

Despite losing their first match against Carlisle, the girls went on to win both other group matches before gaining revenge over the Cumbrians in the final, winning 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Community Officer Steve Williams said: "This is a fantastic achievement from the girls of West Kirby Grammar, and one they well and truly deserve.

"They have played some great football throughout the competition and I wish them the best of luck in the final at Wembley."

Teacher and coach, Mr Robert May, added: "The girls were magnificent. Their team spirit kept them together after they lost the first game and they persevered until the very end."
