Two goals from former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor sent Tranmere Reserves to defeat against Preston in the Pontin's Holidays League Division One West at Prenton Park.  

Mellor found the target with a sixteenth minute header from a Michael Hart cross following a corner. Then sixty seconds later he raced onto Karl Hawley's through ball to beat Rovers keeper John Achterberg.

Achterberg was by far the busier keeper and did well to deny Mellor his hat-trick in the second-half.

Danny Moran and Craig Curran went closest for Tranmere but Chris Neal thwarted them with good saves.
